2019 Ameren Missouri Trade Ally Awards Program

Designed for attendees of our largest event of the year, this program summarized the Ameren Missouri energy efficiency program’s performance for 2019 and listed the awards being given and the presentations delivered at the event. The window design ensured the event logo, finished in silver foil over soft-touch rubberized coating, was always visible. The outer flaps, when closed, simulated traveling at light speed through starry space. The entire program was space-themed, as the event was hosted at the McDonnell Planetarium at the St. Louis Science Center.

KCP&L Standard Energy Rebates

Energy efficiency programs provide rebates or incentives when business customers install more efficient equipment. Designing marketing collateral materials the convey the available incentives in a way that isn’t just a long, boring list of numbers and figures is a challenge, and for KCP&L, I implemented big, splashy images that featured the incentivized technologies to break up the monotony, while keeping the organization uniform and easy to follow. This trifold brochure is intended as a handout for business development representatives, contractor partners and utility staff. The final page includes a call to action directing readers to contact representatives who can answer questions and assist them in completing their energy efficiency projects.

Lockheed Martin Captures CRM System Summary

Our proprietary customer management (CRM) system, based on Microsoft Dynamics, offers clients a robust tool for tracking metrics on thousands of customers and projects, which also means it’s very difficult to explain. In new business pitches, I provide marketing support for writing and graphic design, which involves distilling very complex software and hardware into easily-readable designs and descriptions. Here is one such graphic for a recent proposal.

EV Brochure NB.png

Lockheed Martin Electric Vehicles Programs Brochure

Since cars are a passion of mine, I have been deeply involved in the production of marketing materials related to our support for and design of electric vehicle programs for utility clients. This is a recent handout intended for trade shows and new business pitches to share some brief information about how we can help utilities develop and roll out programs encouraging residents to adopt EVs.

Project Lifecycle Graphic.jpg

Lockheed Martin Energy Efficiency Program Lifecycle

A lot goes into running energy efficiency projects, from marketing and business development bringing into a lead, through project processing, all the way to check cutting and delivery. This graphic, also for a new business pitch, breaks down the entire process into nine easy steps, efficiently conveying our breadth of experience managing many kinds of programs for utilities across the country. The circular form is meant to convey that, after a project is completed, there is always more opportunity for other savings to start.

Indoor Ag NB.png

Ameren Missouri Indoor Agriculture Handout

Two weeks before a large regional cannabis conference, my client was asked to present on available energy efficiency and economic development opportunities for cultivation centers within the service territory. This time period was especially challenging, given the tight scrutiny of any materials related to controversial issues such as cannabis. In this time period, I researched the subject and developed several key messages, drafted a design and copy for a handout and accompanying PowerPoint presentation and got everything through approvals up to the Executive Vice President level. The client was very impressed with the polished design, content and the speed at which it was produced.

HEMS NB.png

Lockheed Martin Home Energy Management System Handout

Ahead of a large energy trade show, Lockheed Martin Energy asked me to produce an eye-catching single-page handout illustrating everything that goes into a complete Home Energy Management (HEMS) system. We operate programs across the country that incentivize the installation of HEMS - but not in any of the programs on which I regularly work. I began by researching HEMS and contacting colleagues in offices that worked on such systems, learning best practices and most common features, which I was able to integrate into what you see on the right.

HEA NB.png

NIPSCO Home Energy Assessment Postcard

This postcard-sized handout was designed to encourage residents in northern Indiana to contact their utility to schedule a short Home Energy Assessment (HEA) that could result in their home becoming significantly more efficient. This is handed out by program personnel at local events and by program partners and contractors who visit residents for other purposes. To date, this and other online efforts have driven considerable participation in the NIPSCO HEA program.

BE NB.png

Lockheed Martin Beneficial Electrification Handout

Often regarded as the future of utility energy programs, “Beneficial Electrification” (BE) programs encourage residential and business customers to switch from products that use fuels like gasoline, natural gas or diesel to comparable electric equipment. This brochure is intended for current and prospective utility clients and explains what BE programs are, how they work, and how Lockheed Martin is the most qualified company to run such programs for them. Our business development reps distribute this at trade shows and during new business pitches.

Benchmarking NB.png

Ameren Missouri Benchmarking Handout

The City of St. Louis recently put into place an ordinance requiring buildings over 50,000 square feet in size to benchmark. In essence, this means large buildings need to measure their energy use, which created a great opportunity for our energy efficiency program to encourage poor-performing buildings to implement new technologies to reduce their load. This handout was provided to large businesses through our program representatives and at local events to encourage them to utilize our program to help improve their benchmarking scores.

Ameren STD NB.png

Ameren Missouri Standard Incentives Brochure

Similar to the KCP&L Standard Incentives Brochure above, the Ameren Standard Rebates Brochure is designed to impart many numbers and figures in the least-boring way possible. The Ameren program, however, is much more complex, with rates being both per-unit and per-kilowatt-hour saved, as well as some application tracks requiring pre-approval. Organization, explanation and an obvious portal to support were essential to the design of this piece. Nearly a year after its initial production, there has been very little confusion about the complicated concepts conveyed and contractors regularly ask us to print more for them to hand to their customers.

KCPL Schools NB.png

KCP&L School Energy Efficiency Guide

This quick reference guide was produced as part of a campaign focused on improving energy efficiency in Kansas City-area schools. To start, I researched the most common areas in which schools use electricity and produced the infographic on the right page. The rest of the document flowed from there, highlighting specific technologies eligible for rebates that could help schools significantly reduce their energy costs. This was printed and hand-delivered at events and during business development representative visits, as well as being emailed in PDF form to all school administrators in the area.

Lockheed Martin Trade Ally Networks Handout

A major strength of our energy efficiency programs is our recruitment and maintenance of a network of contractors and partners, which we call Trade Allies. This one-pager was produced for prospective utility clients to demonstrate our long history of trade ally network development, utilizing concise language and impressive numbers, paired with effective graphics to make an easy-to-read brochure that conveys experience. This is included in new business pitches and is distributed at industry events.

Ameren Holiday NB.png

Ameren Missouri Happy New Year Video Message

In addition to achieving specific energy savings goals, we’re also asked to focus on fostering positive consumer sentiment towards our utility clients. This new year’s message, sent to trade ally partner companies, was purely to thank them for their partnership and demonstrated that we don’t just think of them as means to a financial end. I designed and produced the linked video, as well as the email delivering it.

BE Email NB.png

TVA Beneficial Electrification Whitepaper Email

This email, sent to utility clients, was intended to share our white paper on the increasingly popular subject of Beneficial Electrification. Finding an image with copy space that utilizes a technology that can be incentivized proved highly difficult. I ended up selecting an electric forklift, since they are a popular upgrade and provided a good metaphor for the help we can provide with our whitepaper as well as our program management.

TAAB Invite NB.png

Ameren Missouri Trade Ally Advisory Board Invitation

In order to obtain feedback on our energy efficiency programs, we operate advisory boards, comprised of high-performing members of our trade ally networks. This email was the first invitation for trade allies to participate in our Ameren Missouri advisory board program. It briefly explains the purpose and provides an obvious link for prospective trade allies to join. This achieved a 76% open rate and a 54% click rate.

LM-Southern California Edison Website

Addressing a site that hadn’t been updated since approximately 1999, the Lockheed Martin - Southern California website was both customer- and trade ally-facing and hosted information related to programs operated for Southern California Edison client. I designed a new site from the ground up, working with our IT team to build pages and provide the layout, design, copy and images to build the new site. Both internal and external clients were thrilled with the outcome, which provides a vastly improved user experience.

JCI Strategic Planning Committee Summary Video

With an organization spanning 100 countries, creating a video that quickly and concisely relayed complex changes in organization structure and future goals was a challenge. I created this video with simple animation to create an attractive synopsis of the forthcoming changes to the organization for the global audience.

JCI Website Tutorial Series

With the roll-out of a brand new website for all 117 local organizations as well as the international organization, members needed help in navigating and utilizing all the new features of the site. JCI asked me to help by writing, editing, recording and voicing a series of videos teaching members how to use some of the most commonly-used features of the site.
